Founded in 1997 by a group including Antony Ressler, the firm concentrates on credit, private equity, and real assets, with direct lending to mid-sized companies as the anchor business. Direct lending grew as banks retreated from leveraged loans after the financial crisis, and the firm underwrites and holds those loans in funds rather than distributing them. Management fees on long-dated committed capital produce revenue that is insensitive to any single year's markets. Credit quality across the loan book is the risk that matters. Headquarters are in Los Angeles.

If a meaningful share of your net worth sits in ARES, concentration risk is the question. This calculator quantifies drawdown impact at 30 / 50 / 70%, and the trade-off between selling down (tax cost now) versus hedging (option premium drag), auto-filled with ARES's option-implied volatility.
Example: 5,000 ARES shares at $140.31 is a $701,550 position. A 30% drawdown costs $210,465; a 50% drawdown costs $350,775; a 70% drawdown costs $491,085. The calculator quantifies the trade-off between selling down (immediate capital-gains tax) and hedging (option premium drag) using ARES's option-implied volatility and your cost basis.
