Henry Morgan and Harold Stanley founded the firm in 1935 after Glass-Steagall forced J.P. Morgan to separate investment banking from deposits. The modern strategy, executed under James Gorman after 2010, shifted weight from volatile trading toward wealth management: the Smith Barney joint venture with Citigroup, then E*Trade in 2020 and Eaton Vance the same year, built a business managing trillions in client assets with steadier fee revenue. Institutional securities still supplies advisory and trading. Headquarters are in New York City.
