Founded in 1920 and led for decades by Armand Hammer, the company transformed itself with the 2019 acquisition of Anadarko, a deal financed partly by Berkshire Hathaway preferred stock that left substantial debt. Permian Basin production is the core, alongside chemicals and an unusual investment in direct air capture of carbon dioxide. Debt reduction has been the dominant capital priority since the acquisition. Oil price levels determine how quickly that deleveraging proceeds. Headquarters are in Houston.

Equity comp at Occidental Petroleum
- Occidental's Long-Term Incentive Plan explicitly bars single-trigger vesting: a change in control (CIC) alone does not accelerate RSU vesting. Instead, vesting and forfeiture restrictions lift only on the earlier of the original vesting date or a qualifying termination (fired without Cause, or resignation for Good Reason) occurring within 12 months after the CIC. Separately, some RSU grants are performance-based, with vesting tied to objectives measured as late as the seventh anniversary of the grant date rather than a fixed multi-year schedule.
- Early exercise is not allowed: you have to wait for shares to vest before you can buy them.
- RSUs use double-trigger vesting. Two things must both happen before the shares are yours: (1) the normal time-based vesting completes, and (2) the company has a liquidity event (an IPO or an acquisition). Until both happen, you do not yet own the shares and you do not owe tax on them.

If a meaningful share of your net worth sits in OXY, concentration risk is the question. This calculator quantifies drawdown impact at 30 / 50 / 70%, and the trade-off between selling down (tax cost now) versus hedging (option premium drag), auto-filled with OXY's option-implied volatility.
Example: 5,000 OXY shares at $58.08 is a $290,400 position. A 30% drawdown costs $87,120; a 50% drawdown costs $145,200; a 70% drawdown costs $203,280. The calculator quantifies the trade-off between selling down (immediate capital-gains tax) and hedging (option premium drag) using OXY's option-implied volatility and your cost basis.

Occidental Petroleum equity questions
- How much OXY stock is too much?
- There is no single threshold, but the larger the share of your net worth in one stock, the more a single bad year can set back your plans. The calculator above quantifies the drawdown impact at 30, 50, and 70 percent for your OXY position and weighs selling down (which triggers capital-gains tax now) against hedging (which costs option premium).
- Does Occidental Petroleum grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
- Equity compensation at Occidental Petroleum typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
- Does Occidental Petroleum allow early exercise of stock options?
- No. Occidental Petroleum requires options to vest before you can exercise them, so the holding-period clock for long-term capital-gains treatment starts as each tranche vests and you exercise it.
- Do Occidental Petroleum RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
- Yes. Occidental Petroleum restricted stock units (RSUs) vest only when two things both happen: the time-based schedule completes, and the company has a liquidity event such as an initial public offering (IPO) or an acquisition. Until both occur you do not own the shares and owe no tax on them.
