Founded in 1970 as a calculator chip maker, the company became a hard drive manufacturer in the late 1980s and consolidated the industry alongside Seagate. The 2012 Hitachi GST purchase and the 2016 SanDisk acquisition added capacity and NAND flash, the latter through a long joint venture with Kioxia. In 2025 the company separated its flash business, leaving hard drives for datacenters as the remaining line, where areal density and cloud storage demand drive the economics. Headquarters are in San Jose, California.

Western Digital equity questions
- How much WDC stock is too much?
- There is no single threshold, but the larger the share of your net worth in one stock, the more a single bad year can set back your plans. The calculator above quantifies the drawdown impact at 30, 50, and 70 percent for your WDC position and weighs selling down (which triggers capital-gains tax now) against hedging (which costs option premium).
- Does Western Digital grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
- Equity compensation at Western Digital typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
- Do Western Digital RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
- No. Western Digital restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
