The company spun out of American Radio Systems in 1998 and became the largest owner of wireless communication towers, converting to a real estate investment trust in 2012. The economics are unusually good: a tower built once can host multiple carrier tenants, and each additional tenant adds revenue with almost no incremental cost, under leases running a decade with built-in escalators. Expansion into India proved difficult and the business was sold in 2024. CoreSite added data centers in 2021. Headquarters are in Boston.

American Tower equity questions

How much does it cost to hedge AMT stock?
The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and AMT's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current AMT option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
Does American Tower grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
Equity compensation at American Tower typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
Do American Tower RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
No. American Tower restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
