Al Avery and Jay Adelson, both former Digital Equipment engineers, founded the company in 1998 to build vendor-neutral facilities where networks could interconnect. That neutrality is the moat: hundreds of carriers, cloud providers, and enterprises cross-connect inside its data centers, and each new participant makes the location more valuable to the next. Interconnection revenue carries better margins than raw space and power. The company converted to a real estate investment trust in 2015 and operates on five continents from Redwood City, California.

Equinix equity questions
- How much does it cost to hedge EQIX stock?
- The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and EQIX's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current EQIX option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
- Does Equinix grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
- Equity compensation at Equinix typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
- Do Equinix RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
- No. Equinix restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
