Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded the company in 1989 and named it from their first names. Aviation navigation came first, then marine, automotive, and outdoor devices; the automotive dashboard business peaked before phones absorbed turn-by-turn navigation, and the company redeployed into wearables, cycling computers, and dive computers. Fitness and outdoor now supply most revenue, and aviation avionics remains a high-margin franchise with long certification cycles. Garmin is incorporated in Switzerland with principal operations in Olathe, Kansas, and manufactures much of its own hardware in Taiwan.

Garmin equity questions
- How much does it cost to hedge GRMN stock?
- The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and GRMN's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current GRMN option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
- Does Garmin grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
- Equity compensation at Garmin typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
- Do Garmin RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
- No. Garmin restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
