Earl and Lillian Congdon founded the company in 1934 with one truck running between Richmond and Norfolk, and the family retains a large stake. It hauls less-than-truckload freight, consolidating shipments from many customers through a service center network where terminal density and dock efficiency determine cost. The company has consistently reported the best operating ratio in the industry and invested in capacity through downturns, which positioned it to absorb share when Yellow Corporation collapsed in 2023. Headquarters are in Thomasville, North Carolina.
