Five former IBM engineers founded the company in Walldorf, Germany in 1972 to build standard business software rather than bespoke systems. R/3 made client-server enterprise resource planning the corporate default in the 1990s, and S/4HANA is the in-memory successor that customers are migrating to under a deadline for mainstream maintenance on the older suite. Acquisitions added cloud lines: SuccessFactors for human resources, Ariba for procurement, Concur for travel expense, and Qualtrics, later divested. SAP remains Europe's largest software company by revenue.

Equity comp at SAP

  • RSUs use single-trigger vesting: shares become yours as each portion vests on schedule, and the value is taxed as ordinary income at that point. No IPO or acquisition is required.

SAP equity questions

How much does it cost to hedge SAP stock?
The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and SAP's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current SAP option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
Does SAP grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
Equity compensation at SAP typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
Do SAP RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
No. SAP restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
