About SLB

SLB, formerly known as Schlumberger, is a multinational oilfield services company. Founded in France in 1926, the company is now incorporated as SLB N.V. in Willemstad, Curaçao, with principal executive offices in four cities: Paris, France; Houston, Texas, United States; London, UK; and The Hague, Netherlands. As of 2022, it is both the world's largest offshore drilling company and the world's largest offshore drilling contractor by revenue.

Brothers Conrad and Marcel Schlumberger pioneered electrical well logging in France in 1926, and the company they founded became the largest oilfield services provider, renaming itself SLB in 2022. It sells the technology and crews that drill, measure, and complete wells rather than owning reserves, so revenue follows customer capital spending rather than commodity prices directly. International and offshore markets supply most activity. Digital and carbon management lines extend the portfolio. Headquarters are in Houston with historic bases in Paris and The Hague.

Equity comp at SLB

  • RSUs use single-trigger vesting: shares become yours as each portion vests on schedule, and the value is taxed as ordinary income at that point. No IPO or acquisition is required.

A protective put caps your downside on the SLB position at a chosen floor; a zero-cost collar pays for that floor by capping the upside. This calculator prices both structures off the current SLB option chain, with annual cost, max loss, and tax-treatment notes.

SLB equity questions

How much does it cost to hedge SLB stock?
The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and SLB's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current SLB option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
Does SLB grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
Equity compensation at SLB typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
Do SLB RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
No. SLB restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
