Founded in 1970 as a calculator chip maker, the company became a hard drive manufacturer in the late 1980s and consolidated the industry alongside Seagate. The 2012 Hitachi GST purchase and the 2016 SanDisk acquisition added capacity and NAND flash, the latter through a long joint venture with Kioxia. In 2025 the company separated its flash business, leaving hard drives for datacenters as the remaining line, where areal density and cloud storage demand drive the economics. Headquarters are in San Jose, California.

Western Digital equity questions
- How much does it cost to hedge WDC stock?
- The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and WDC's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current WDC option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
- Does Western Digital grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
- Equity compensation at Western Digital typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
- Do Western Digital RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
