Willis Johnson started with a single salvage yard in California in 1982, and the company now runs the online auction where insurers dispose of vehicles they have declared total losses. Buyers bid from anywhere, which widened the bidder pool far beyond a local yard and raised recovery values enough that insurers consolidated onto the platform. Land ownership is deliberate: storage capacity near population centers is scarce and functions as a barrier. Higher vehicle repair costs push more damaged cars into total-loss status. Headquarters are in Dallas.

If a meaningful share of your net worth sits in CPRT, concentration risk is the question. This calculator quantifies drawdown impact at 30 / 50 / 70%, and the trade-off between selling down (tax cost now) versus hedging (option premium drag), auto-filled with CPRT's option-implied volatility.
Example: 5,000 CPRT shares at $31.51 is a $157,550 position. A 30% drawdown costs $47,265; a 50% drawdown costs $78,775; a 70% drawdown costs $110,285. The calculator quantifies the trade-off between selling down (immediate capital-gains tax) and hedging (option premium drag) using CPRT's option-implied volatility and your cost basis.
