Automotive is the anchor: microcontrollers, radar, battery management, and the secure element chips inside contactless payment cards and passports. The 2015 Freescale acquisition roughly doubled it and cemented the automotive position. A $44 billion sale to Qualcomm collapsed in 2018 when Chinese regulatory approval never arrived, and NXP collected a $2 billion breakup fee. Headquarters remain in Eindhoven, with substantial operations in Austin and San Jose.
