About Aflac

Equity grants at Aflac typically include restricted stock units (RSUs).

Aflac Incorporated is an American insurance company and is the largest provider of supplemental insurance in the United States. It was founded in 1955 and is based in Columbus, Georgia. In the U.S., it underwrites a wide range of insurance policies, but is perhaps more known for its payroll deduction insurance coverage, which pays cash benefits when a policyholder has a covered accident or illness. The company states it "provides financial protection to more than 50 million people worldwide".

Three brothers founded the company in Columbus, Georgia in 1955 and found their market in Japan, where it began selling cancer insurance in 1974 and became the dominant supplemental insurer. Japan still supplies a majority of earnings, which makes the yen exchange rate a direct input to reported results. Products pay cash benefits directly to policyholders for specified conditions rather than reimbursing providers, sold largely through workplace payroll deduction. The duck advertising campaign began in 2000. Headquarters remain in Columbus.

Aflac equity questions

How much does it cost to hedge AFL stock?
The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and AFL's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current AFL option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
Does Aflac grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
Equity compensation at Aflac typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
Do Aflac RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
No. Aflac restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
