MercadoLibre, Inc., known as Mercado Livre in Brazil, literally meaning "free market" in both languages, is a company of Argentine origin headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay and incorporated in Delaware in the United States that operates online marketplaces dedicated to e-commerce and online auctions. Marcos Galperin founded the company in 1999 while at Stanford, building an auction marketplace for Latin America when card penetration and postal reliability made ecommerce difficult. Solving those constraints produced the business: Mercado Pago for payments and credit, and Mercado Envios for logistics, both now large enough to matter independently of the marketplace. Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico supply most volume. The company is incorporated in Delaware, operationally headquartered in Montevideo and Buenos Aires, and remains the dominant ecommerce platform in the region.

MercadoLibre equity questions
- How much does it cost to hedge MELI stock?
- The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and MELI's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current MELI option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
- Does MercadoLibre grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
- Equity compensation at MercadoLibre typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
- Do MercadoLibre RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
- No. MercadoLibre restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
