Henry Wells and William Fargo founded the company in 1852 to move gold and mail during the California rush, and the stagecoach remains its emblem. The 1998 Norwest merger and the 2008 Wachovia purchase built a national franchise concentrated in consumer and commercial lending rather than trading. A 2016 scandal over millions of unauthorized accounts brought fines, executive departures, and a Federal Reserve asset cap that constrained growth for years before its 2025 removal. Headquarters are in San Francisco.

Wells Fargo equity questions
- How much does it cost to hedge WFC stock?
- The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and WFC's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current WFC option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
- Does Wells Fargo grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
- Equity compensation at Wells Fargo typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
- Do Wells Fargo RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
- No. Wells Fargo restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
