Bob Kierlin founded the company in Winona, Minnesota in 1967 to sell nuts and bolts, and it grew into an industrial distributor by placing inventory as close to the customer as possible. Onsite locations inside customer plants and vending machines dispensing gloves, drill bits, and safety supplies now drive a large share of sales, turning a distributor into embedded infrastructure. That proximity model raises switching costs. Headquarters remain in Winona, and results track manufacturing and construction activity.

Fastenal equity questions
- How much does it cost to hedge FAST stock?
- The cost of a protective put depends on how far below the current price you set the floor, how long the protection lasts, and FAST's option-implied volatility. A zero-cost collar lowers that cost by selling away some upside. The calculator above prices both structures off the current FAST option chain and shows the annual cost, maximum loss, and tax treatment.
- Does Fastenal grant ISOs, NSOs, or RSUs?
- Equity compensation at Fastenal typically takes the form of restricted stock units (RSUs). Restricted stock units are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
- Do Fastenal RSUs use double-trigger vesting?
- No. Fastenal restricted stock units (RSUs) use single-trigger vesting: each tranche becomes yours as it vests on schedule, taxed as ordinary income at that point, with no liquidity event required.
